Founder and candy maker, Sheri Swist, has been cooking up homemade toffee for her friends and family for the holidays since she was a child, putting her unique spin on an old family recipe. Little did she know that one day, armed with an undergraduate degree in classical piano performance, a background as an investor in real estate, and a law degree from Pepperdine University, making toffee would become a career.
Last year Sheri cooked up a delectable batch of the toffee for the holidays to thank all of her friends for their support in helping her with caring for her new baby. It had been a few years since she had made the toffee because of law school. Not surprisingly the response was the same as usual, people were raving about it. In particular, her son’s father former L.A. Laker Norm Nixon, who couldn’t stop eating the toffee himself, took a large plate of it to his office one morning and it was gone by noon. Then when she sent some to her friends the Waltrips, Glen Waltrip loved it so much she brought up the idea of selling it.
All of this reminded her of when she used to work for former Congressman Chris Cox fifteen year ago and had given the toffee to him at a party for Christmas. “He had been eating my homemade toffee, and when he left the party, he accidentally left the toffee behind,” explains Sheri. “About 20 minutes later he was back to get his toffee. That is when I knew the toffee really made an impression!”
Looking for a way to earn a living while raising her son, Sheri decided to turn her hobby into a profession and launched Malibu Toffee. Malibu Toffee was founded in early 2006 with the encouragement of close friends and family who thought it was time that her tasty toffee candy became available to the general public.
